FLAMA VOLTA BUILDING WORKSHOP

In this workshop you will build, start to finish, your own high performance surfboard with the latest technology from Flamasurf. The FlamaVolta tech is one of the most environmentally friendly construction methods today. A lamination method with no fiberglass and toxic chemicals involved, that allows to make high performance and longlasting surfboards.

TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE SURF CULTURE

By attending this course you’ll also help boost the developement of FlamaCircular: an initiative that aims to promote an open source technology to implement sustainable alternatives within local surfboard industries through knowledge sharing and collaboration. In Cadiz the course will take place at the Longwinter Glassing factory, where you’ll learn alongside experienced shapers and glassers that will take part in the course with you. 

WHAT YOU GET

This course takes about 30 hours, spread over a 5 day period (depending on how long you stay) with a maximmum of two students per week. You will learn about natural materials (paulownia wood, bamboo, cork, veneers, linen and flax cloth, etc) and how to combine them, the vacuum bagging process, woodworking techniques and many tricks and possibilities of this unlimited tech. We’ll concentrate on the building part, but you’ll also learn about shaping and hydrodynamics throughout the course.

BUILD, LEARN AND SURF IN CÁDIZ (SOUTH SPAIN)

We will use the different stages of the process to split our time between building and surfing. The FlamaVolta technique consists on a series of different processes, each one followed by a waiting period to allow the glue to cure. We will adapt to tides and surf conditions to decide whether we go surfing or working on your board, so you’ll get the most out of your stay in the coast of Cadiz, also called Costa de la Luz due to its magical light. Here you'll find reefs, mellow pointbreaks or barreling sandbanks, all in a reduced area.

BEFORE YOU COME

The experience begins well before you come to Cádiz. First you will discuss the board you want to build with one of the shapers at Longwinter Glassing, so when you start the course you’ll have a professionally shaped board ready to start with this revolutionary and sustainable lamination process.

BASIC SCHEDULE

Day 1: fine shaping blank (preshape), gluing tail-nose-fin blocks, cleaning blocks
Day 2 (morning): preparing skins, bottom vacuum lamination (flax+veneer)
Day 2 (afternoon): preparing skins, cutlap sanding, deck vacuum lamination (flax+veneer)
Day 3: cutlap sanding, preparing skins, deck vacuum lamination
Day 4: installing finboxes, sanding finboxes, final sanding, wood treatment
Day 5: decoration and varnishing
